Texturing and Rendering a Wine Bottle: Using Content Browser Presets to Speed up Production

In this video we’ll learn how to locate production ready 3d assets in the Content Browser “Visualize” preset library. Then in the last half of the video we’ll combine two assets to get what we need for our project.



In this video, we'll set up our project file structure, and then learn how to locate 3D assets in the Content Browser's visualized preset library. Then in the last half of the video, we'll combine two of those assets to get what we need for our project. So let's go ahead and build our project file structure for this project. I'm going to use C:\projects on my hard drive. You can use any place you like on your machine. And then in there, I'm making a wine_bottle_and_box folder. Inside there, I've got footage, output, reference, and scenes. Footage is going to be for any visual elements that we use to create textures or whatever for our 3D scenes. Output is where we're going to put our final renders. Reference is an isolated place we can keep all of our reference materials so it'll be easy to sift through. And scenes is where we'll keep our Cinema 4D files. Now that we have our folders, let's go ahead and save out our scene. I'm going to go Save As and then right here, in my C\:projects\wine_bottle_and_box are my folders. And we're going to save our 3D file in the scenes folder. And we'll call this wine_bottle_v01 for version. So now I wanted to show you a picture of my final. So this is what we're going to be making. It's a generic wine bottle shape that we just put custom label and colors on, and then set up a nice studio for a render. So instead of creating all of this from scratch, we can take a look at the visualize presets and see if there's anything in there that we can use. So we're going to come over here to the right of our interface, and there's the content browser. This is the default view. I actually prefer the Tree view, so it gives us the hierarchy over here on the left. And then I'm just going to select Presets. Currently, I just have the Visualized presets and some defaults. So we're going to stick with Visualized presets for this tutorial series. I'm going to hit Ctrl+F to activate a search. And I'm just going to type in "wine," and you'll see we have several results. I'll make them a little bit bigger with this slider down here. Now let's go ahead and pull in these three wine bottles so we can take a look at them. You can just pull these in one at a time. Unless they say C4D at the end, and that means it's a full scene setup. So for those, you have to double-click, which will open a new scene. So we'll double-click on the bottle wine here. So let's turn on our Interactive Render Region with Alt+R. And you can see, this is a really nice setup, and we'll be creating something like this but a little bit different. But the materials on this look like they would work great for my project. So I actually wanted to steal the materials from this bottle. I'm going to hit Alt+R to turn off our Viewport Renderer. Then I want to come over here and grab my Selection Tool, grab the bottle, and then I'm going to jump back to the Objects view, just so I can make sure I've got the parent. So I'm just click on the parent here. And that way, we'll get all these children. Go back to the Content Browser. And then just hit Ctrl+C for copy. And now we'll paste this back in the other scene so go to Window, and here's wine_bottle_v01. I'm going to hit S to frame those up in the viewport. And the last one I pulled in will be selected so that's what is selected. So I'm just going to move it over so we can see both. And then I'm going to hit Ctrl+V. And this is a warning about textures, and it's going to change the textures from relative to absolute paths when we paste this in here, so that way, Cinema 4D can track those textures down. So just hit Yes, and it plopped it right in front of our camera. So I just pulled back a bit. So now, we've got all three of these bottles in this scene. But you can see the scale of this bottle is way different. So that's something to think about as you're using Content Browser presets, is, keep an eye on the scale because sometimes, it's not accurate. So now we have the materials from the red wine bottle in this scene. But the white wine bottle is actually the bottle that looked the best to me or the most similar to the package design that I was after. So I want to keep both of these bottles, and then we're going to mix and match those to create our own. And I wanted to pull them all three in to look at, but it turns out we don't need the left bottle for anything. So let's delete this guy. I'm going to switch to my rectangle selection so I can select all of him. Just delete. And since we deleted him and we didn't need any of his materials, I'm going to use Function, Remove Unused Materials to get rid of those extra materials. So now we have everything we need to put our wine bottle together. So let's turn on our Interactive Render Region with Alt+R so we can see what we're working with. And we can't really see anything because there's no lights or scene for the bottles to interact with. So I'm going to go ahead and add one light. I'm going to pull it out here in front of the bottles a little bit, and then raise it up. So that'll give us a little bit of light, and then one plane for a floor. And that should be enough to let us see the materials. So there they are. And we just want to move the red materials over to the white wine bottle. Let's turn off Interactive Render Region with Alt+R. And you can see we have our materials down here in the Material Manager. And we want to replace this bottle glass with this bottle glass. And in Cinema, if you just Alt+drag one material onto the other, it will replace that material in the scene, and the other material just goes away. So let's do the same thing with the wine. There's the red wine, here's the liquid for the white wine. So Alt+drag that. And we're done. If you hit Alt+R for Interactive Render Region, you can see our materials have been transferred over to our white wine bottle. And that's exactly what we needed. So now, we can just get rid of the red wine bottle and its materials. So go over here to the Object tab, and it's the one called bottle. So we will just delete that bottle, and then Remove Unused Materials. Then I'm just going to delete our plane and our light. Looks like we have one little leftover from that original red wine bottle, I'm going to delete that. And then I'm going to zero out the X coordinates on our white wine bottle to move it back to the center of the scene. And now, we're ready to move on and continue building our project. So as you can see, if you can find what's needed or at least close to it over here in the Content Browser, you're going to save a ton of time versus creating those assets yourself.
