Game Development

Want to create a video game using Cinema 4D and a video game engine like Unity? On this page you’ll find a collection of Cineversity and 3rd party tutorials and resources that will take your 3D skills and help you apply them in interactive projects.

Quickstart

If you’re brand new to game development and you want to dive in, start here.

  1. Add to playlist.

Unity Game Development with Cinema 4D

Learn key concepts, tools and techniques for using Cinema 4D assets within Unity as you create a basic first-person shooter game where you play as a farmer defending your homestead against invading aliens.

Techniques

While these tutorials don’t take you step-by-step to a finished project, the techniques you learn can be applied to any number of game development projects.

    Modeling & Texturing Game Assets

Use Cinema 4D to box model a radio, use BodyPaint 3D to UV unwrap that asset, and use Photoshop to texture it for use in your choice of game engine.

  2. Add to playlist.

    Biped Rigging for Games

Use the character object’s advanced biped rig to setup and weight a low poly farmer character.

  3. Add to playlist.

    UV - Relax and Unwrap

UV unwrap a low poly dinosaur model to prepare it for texture painting. Note: While Cinema 4D’s interface has changed since this series was recorded, the workflow of selecting edge seams and unwrapping your mesh for 3D painting has a stayed largely the same.

  4. Add to playlist.

    3D Painting: Hand-Painted Textures

Ben Mathis shares his process as he creates real-time textures for: an anthropomorphized penguin, a photorealistic human head, and a gun-carrying super soldier.

  5. Add to playlist.

    Motion Capture

Import motion capture data onto  skeleton, use animation layers to blend the motions, create a seamless loop, and apply that motion to a character in Unity game engine. Recorded in Cinema 4D 11, this series covers many techniques that are still relevant.

Projects

Learn game development by creating a project start to finish.

    Pong

With an interesting perspective on using Cinema 4D for game creation, this tutorial shows you how to use Cinema 4D as your game engine. You’ll learn how to create a 3D pong game using Xpresso tags and the C.O.F.F.E.E. programming language.

Toolbox

We’ve developed a number of useful plugins, and scripts to help you with your game development projects.

  1. Add to playlist.

    CV-SmartExport

CV-SmartExport offers Cinema 4D users powerful flexibility when exporting 3D models and animation to popular formats like FBX and OBJ. Export selected objects and create separate files for each scene layer or object group. Bake Position, Scale, Rotation and PLA data prior to export. Export sequential files for each frame, complete projects with assets, or separate files based on markers used to define separate animation takes. All this functionality is available within a simple plugin that greatly simplifies the process of bringing Cinema 4D assets into your game engine.

  2. Add to playlist.

    CV-C4D to UE4

CV-C4D to UE4 is a set of plugins for Cinema 4D and Unreal Engine 4 that greatly simplify the process of transferring your game ready assets from Cinema 4D to Unreal Engine 4.

Inspiration

While you won’t be able to follow these videos step-by-step, seeing the work of top-artists can prove truly inspiring.

How C4D Can Help Non-Programmers Create 3D Video Games

In this SIGGRAPH 2014 presentation, M dot Strange share his process for creating games with Cinema 4D and Unity. M dot Strange uses the PlayMaker plugin for Unity (Hutong Games) to add game logic visually without the need to write any code.
